About Adam
Adam Richard Rottinghaus is an author, educator, designer, brand strategist, and media theorist with over 20 years of industry experience in technology and marketing.
Adam is an Associate Professor of Strategic Communication at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He researches and teaches on emerging technologies, media, and advertising/public relations. As a teacher, scholar, and industry professional, Adam brings a wide range of perspectives to help his students and clients identify communication problems and develop innovative solutions.
Adam earned a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he specialized in media and cultural theory. He holds a M.S. in Communication from North Carolina State University, which focused on quantitative and qualitative research methods for organizational communication. As an undergraduate at Grand View University, he studied art and communication, ultimately double majoring in graphic design and graphic journalism.
He is the author of Upgrade Culture and Technological Change: The Business of the Future, now available from all major retailers in hard copy, paperback, ebook, and Chinese language editions. Adam is the author of the forthcoming textbook on advertising and public relations called Strategic Communication: A Visual and Practical Guide. He is also writing a book that tells entertaining stories of high-profile fraud cases that involved emerging technologies and marketing while offering lessons for the general public to protect themselves in the coming years from deceptive media content produced by artificial intelligence tools. It is tentatively titled, Scam Likely: Learning to Trust in the Coming Age of Media Deception.
For over twenty years, Adam has been a graphic designer and art director specializing in print, web, and multimedia production, as well as marketing strategy and brand management. He has strategic, creative, technical, and client management experience that ranges from tech start-ups to global corporations in technology, healthcare, biotech, chemical, education, and publishing.
To unwind, Adam enjoys gardening, cooking, and traveling with his wife Alia, as well as playing baseball, disc golf, and reading/watching/listening to science fiction stories. His latest creative venture is making graphic short stories.
